The Story Behind the Buckets

The story began in 2016 with a wonderful and kind act of generosity.

What More UK Ltd (WHAM), one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of plastic homeware, gardening and storage products, invited Gwyn McCormack, Director of Positive Eye Ltd, to visit their manufacturing and distribution centre. During the visit, WHAM generously donated 36 buckets to be shared with schools and services supporting children with vision impairment.

At Positive Eye, we have always believed that the best learning resources are often the simplest. A bucket might be a storage container to most people, but in the right hands it can become a storytelling tool, a sensory exploration box, a literacy resource and a source of joy.

Each bucket was distributed to a school or service, accompanied by a Positive Eye bucket apron. The challenge was simple:

Create a story bucket and share your ideas.

The response was incredible.

Over the following months, teachers of children and young people with vision impairment, sensory support teams, specialist schools and organisations from across the UK created imaginative story buckets and shared their ideas. Those contributions were brought together to create this booklet.

What’s Inside?

The booklet features more than 20 story bucket ideas inspired by popular books, themes and curriculum topics, including:

  • We’re Going on a Polar Bear Hunt
  • The Hungry Caterpillar
  • Jack and the Beanstalk
  • Superworm
  • Commotion in the Ocean
  • The Smartest Giant in Town
  • Harry’s Visit to the Optician
  • Frozen
  • A Bucketful of Dinosaurs

and many more.

Each contribution includes practical suggestions, resources, learning opportunities and adaptations designed to make literacy accessible and meaningful for children with vision impairment.

Why Story Buckets Work

Story buckets help children move beyond simply listening to a story.

By exploring real objects, textures, sounds and sensory experiences linked to a book, children are given opportunities to build vocabulary, develop concepts, improve communication skills and become active participants in storytelling.

Most importantly, story buckets create memorable and enjoyable literacy experiences.

They encourage curiosity, imagination and engagement while helping children make meaningful connections between stories and the world around them.

A Resource Created Through Collaboration

One of the things that makes this booklet so special is that it represents the creativity, generosity and expertise of so many people.

From the original donation by WHAM to the schools, local authority services and professionals who contributed their ideas, Creative Story Buckets is a wonderful example of what can happen when people come together with a shared goal: making literacy accessible and enjoyable for every child.
