Classroom observation planning & performance management

Classroom observation planning & performance management resources. Written to support teachers of VI in setting objectives and identifying classroom observations. To best evidence, firstly the difference and contribution that the specialist teacher makes. Secondly, towards pupil progress. Their teaching, learning and service improvement.

The guide has two sections:

  1. Setting Teacher Performance Management Objectives
  2. Classroom observations

Setting Teacher Performance Management Objectives

The aim of this section is to help the teacher. To examine performance objectives appropriate for consideration.
For instance, providing help in setting targets.

There’s a range of examples. Something for each type of objective. Furthermore, there are a range of worked examples for each type of aim. Illustrating action steps and performance criteria. Plus evidence required to complete the goal.

Classroom observation planning

Suggestions for the type of teacher classroom observations. What is suitable for consideration. The preparation of classroom observation. Outlining the steps to completing the process.

Completing the classroom observation form

How the lesson observed relates to the teacher’s objectives. Linking it to the relevant professional standards. Including national SEN standards. Plus the planned contribution to pupil progress.

Areas for consideration

When establishing criteria for judging a successful independent access lesson/direct support lesson. Covering the criteria for observation during the lesson by the reviewer. Agreed between the reviewer and the teacher before the lesson.

Classroom observation checklists

For both types of classroom observation (direct support and independent access skills). Provided for use by the reviewer. This details the criteria identified for observation. To record whether the teacher’s performance is ok or requires further development.

Completing the observation – feedback form

To identify strengths. Similarly areas for development. Follow up work and reviewee’s comments. Completed following the observation.
