Teaching a child with Sudden or Deteriorating Vision Course
Course objective: Supporting children with sudden sight loss
To gain an understanding of how to support the child, family and school during the first few months following sight loss/deterioration
The course covers:
Reasons for sudden sight loss
- A brief overview of the reasons for sudden sight loss or deterioration in vision
- Impact of sudden sight loss for child, family, school and service
Short term action plan to meet the child’s immediate needs
- Suggested steps to take child, family, school/setting and service through the first three months
Long term action plan to meet the child’s needs
- Sets out the steps to introducing independent access skills and in particular looks at the emotional issues associated with the introduction of Braille and long cane skills
Curriculum access
- Strategies to enable immediate access during the period when the child may not have the necessary skills to do this independently
Emotional well being and social inclusion
- Issues, strategies and suggestions to support the child’s emotional well being and social inclusion
The course has a practical focus with opportunity for practitioners to share experience and to reflect on practice.
Practitioners will leave with a comprehensive resource pack both in hardcopy and on CD
